The
University of Montana (UM)
is seeking a
Director of Strategic Planning and Implementation
who will help build a University culture of strategic thinking, planning, and implementation. This important role will provide high-level insight and guidance both for University leadership and the campus community while leading several processes to bring the University’s Strategic Operating Rhythm to life.
Reporting to the Chief of Staff and Associate Vice President for Strategic Planning and Implementation, the Director of University Strategic Planning and Implementation serves in the Office of Strategic Planning and Implementation (OSPI) in the President’s sector. This individual has responsibility for and directly implements several components of the University’s annual Strategic Operating Rhythm, including integration of university planning with university budgeting and institutional data tracking and assessment of key institutional initiatives. The Director provides direct support to the Associate Vice President for Strategic Implementation and to the Special Advisor for Strategic Innovation by advising on, implementing, and managing processes; providing strategic insight; working with a broad swath of stakeholders; and executing the University’s Strategic Operating Rhythm to foster a campus-wide culture of strategic adaptation, action-oriented implementation, and accountability.

, centered on the concept of “inclusive prosperity,” is both bold and inspired. The Director of Strategic Planning and Implementation, along with the rest of the OSPI team, will be a vital partner in translating this vision into action.
The position is expected to start during the Spring Semester, 2023.
Essential responsibilities
Strategic Operating Rhythm
Support annual implementation of the University’s Strategic Operating Rhythm
Work collaboratively to run and continuously improve the Strategic Operating Rhythm
Integrate the University Budging Committee, University Assessment and Accreditation Committee, Flagship Fund Advisory Group, and OSPI efforts
Work closely with the Chairs of the University Budget Committee, the University Assessment and Accreditation Committee, and others to align processes and timelines
Make strategic adjustments to the Strategic Operating Rhythm in response to stakeholder input and leadership direction
Strategy and Initiative Development
Manage efforts to annually refresh UM’s strategic objectives and to refine UM’s priority initiatives/strategies
Facilitate continuous external and internal environmental scanning and situation analysis efforts to inform the annual refresh of UM’s strategic efforts
Provide guidance to campus partners as they develop, refine, and reconsider initiatives/strategies
Support process for vetting and prioritizing initiatives/strategies for leadership consideration
Initiative Execution and Project Management
Ensure execution of strategy
Develop and deliver training on development of robust action-oriented implementation plans and progress indicators
Collaborate with strategy leads on a regular cadence that maintains attention on execution
Facilitate the development of project objectives, milestones, and scheduled plans
Monitor progress and ensure consistent, transparent reporting including progress on key activities and outcome milestones
Identify barriers/roadblocks and engage in ad-hoc problem solving to resolve critical issues
Elevate key decisions and roadblocks to leadership when necessary
Identify connections and collaborations across efforts
Define next steps
Identify successes to communicate
Support Associate Vice President for Strategic Planning and Implementation in planning University Leadership Council meetings, committee and stakeholder trainings, and Executive Sponsor trainings
Compile metrics for Key Performance Indicator and Performance Indicator tracking and annual initiative reviews
Data and Assessment
Support efforts to align University priorities, data strategy, and assessment
Work directly with OSPI leadership and Institutional Research leadership to set and implement a University data strategy
Provide guidance to strategy leads in setting indicators to track progress, i.e., understanding the data available, anticipating the use of that data to demonstrate progress and support continuous improvement
Partner with the Data Office to build strategy-level scorecards/dashboards to track progress
Partner with the UAAC to build institution-level scorecards/dashboards to track progress
Other
Provide strategic insight and partnership to the Associate Vice President for Strategic Planning and Implementation
Gather and synthesize stakeholder perspectives for the purposes building OSPI partnerships, adapting the Strategic Operating Rhythm, and improving other OSPI functions
Position Details
Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract Professional and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package
including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program. Salary range for this position is $75,000-$85,000 per year, commensurate with qualifications.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree
At least 7 years of progressively responsible professional experience in education, program development and implementation, or in other learning or student-facing environments
A demonstrated understanding of program development and strategic planning
Knowledge of contemporary strategic planning and operational management models, processes, and tools
Demonstrated experience utilizing data and assessment to inform decision making and continuous improvement
Project management experience
Ability to meet deadlines and take direction
A compelling communicator – ability to effectively communicate with a variety of people, both orally and in writing
Ability to engage and inspire to build a network of partners and supporters
Team-oriented and open to ideas and input from colleagues; ability to develop and maintain productive, collegial working relationships with students, parents, faculty, administrators, staff, and alums
Strong organizational skills
A sense of informed empathy and superb listening skills
Ability to identify and articulate creative solutions to complex problems
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects/tasks with thorough attention to detail; ability to set and attain goals while working both collaboratively and independently on various projects
Ability to facilitate effective meetings and collaborative processes
Ability to thoughtfully manage conflict
Ability to comprehensively collect, analyze, and assess quantitative and qualitative data related to specific desired outcomes and program effectiveness, and to work collaboratively with the University Data Office to achieve assessment/research goals
Demonstrated ability to work in a highly collaborative environment, fostering and developing working relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders throughout the academic community
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the diverse populations on a university campus and the ability to successfully address the various needs and issues presented by a diverse student population
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
At least 7 years of experience working effectively with students, staff, faculty, and senior administration within a higher education setting is strongly preferred
Experience successfully leading high-level projects in a postsecondary setting
Experience in roles focused on organizational effectiveness, strategic planning, and project management
Service on university-wide committees
Leadership of academic-oriented committees and/or teams of academic-oriented employees
