9iFX is a full service post production studio based in Portland, Oregon. We’re a small team working on exciting projects for fun clients, including VH1, NBC, Call of Duty, Nike, Adidas, Intel, Peloton, just to name a few. Our specialty is VFX and Motion Graphics but we offer most post services working in the Film, TV, TVC, web/social, and event spaces. We love working on projects that expand our skillset, excite the team, and push the technological frontier. We also love work-life balance and do our best to plan for the unexpected so we don’t lose our evenings.
Currently we are looking to add an extremely organized, personable, professional, and skilled VFX Art Director to our team. A key collaborator with the studio’s Producer, Creative Director, and Artists, the VFX Art Director is responsible for the technical and artistic quality of the projects produced, pitching new concepts, developing new ideas, presenting the team’s work with clients, as well as client interfacing and satisfaction. They will be responsible for overseeing the production of visual effects and all 2D/3D content on the projects that are assigned to them. The standard of quality is established during the exchanges with the directors, agency creative directors, agency producers and production staff. The VFX Art Director must therefore understand and interpret creative intentions while also being conscious of the project’s budget constraints set by the production team. The VFX Art Director will work in collaboration with the Post-Production Producer on tasks such as budget, planning and client relations.
The VFX Art Director will also play an important role in the sales efforts for new potential projects. This could include script reading and breakdown, project time/budget estimation, attending first contact meetings and conference calls with potential clients and being able to speak definitively and clearly about the studio’s abilities, resources and culture.
Day in the life:
· Work underneath the Creative Director and Producer to lead a small team of VFX and motion artists towards creating stunning digital media through your skills in design and understanding of VFX and animation pipelines.
· Using your design skills, build decks to present works in progress, pitch new concepts, or land new clients. Build mood boards, story boards and wireframes.
· Help bring artwork across the finish line with your skills in Adobe CC, understanding of color, typography, cinematography and compositing
· Ensure your 3D and 2D artists are working effectively and troubleshooting artistic technical challenges while maintaining quality control in collaboration with the Studio Creative Director and Producer
· Join the Producer in client calls and meetings while building and establishing strong client confidence
· Assist with estimates and flag overages
· Work with the Producer to outline show requirements involving team size, team strengths, & resources
· Work with Creative Director and Producer to outline show pipeline procedure if unique to given show
· Communicate creative and technical input for shot design & completion with VFX artists while maintaining Director’s vision and working within budget.
· Understand and clearly communicate Director’s and/or Agency creatives feedback
· Assist in the recruitment of talent as necessary
· Identify additional software tools, find and develop solutions in collaboration with the TDs
· Evaluate the utility of new tools/software that are available on the market
· Monitor technological developments
Technical Skills
· Adobe CC, including AE, Ai, Pr, Ps, Id, Lr,
· Clear understanding of 3D and 2D pipelines: primarily using C4D, Redshift, After Effects, Premiere, Maya, Houdini.
· Using project management tools such as SHOTGRID or google docs/excel
· Knowledge and interest in Real Time technology for either Unreal or Unity
· Comparable software experience
Qualifications & Experience
Minimum five (5)
years of work experience in the Agency, VFX Animation, film post-production, animated TV series, visual effects, or motion graphics industries.
· Extensive knowledge of VFX production and CG pipelines
· Thorough understanding of film or commercial production and on-set experience
· Experience with recruitment, training and supervision of CG artists
· Excellent organizational and communication skills
· Excellent project management skills
· Ability to supervise and assign tasks to a production team
· Must be attentive to the production team, the other supervisors and the coordinators
· Must be located in Portland OR, or willing to relocate
· This will be a partially remote, partially in-house position depending on project status, artist’s remote capabilities, and production needs.
· Must be good at Smash Bros 64
