This includes maintaining policies and procedures, hiring and maintaining competent staff, participating in various meetings (Pharmacy & Therapeutics, Med/Surg- Peds/ SNF, Infection Control, Department Head, etc.), maintaining a hospital formulary, and procuring medications cost-effectively.
 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:


Directs, coordinates, and controls the overall operation of the Pharmacy Department.

Assigns supervisory authority and areas of responsibility to the staff pharmacist, and assigns duties and responsibilities to the pharmacy technicians and helpers.

Directs and coordinates the integration of the Pharmacy Department’s functions with other aspects of overall patient care.

Works closely with the nursing and medical staff and other clinical department heads in addressing pharmaceutical services issues and to support the maintenance of high-quality patient care.

Evaluates drug orders for appropriateness with regard to patient age, condition, disease state, and concomitant therapies to promote optimal patient outcomes.

Directs the pharmacy’s quality improvement activities and insures compliance with patient care and medical practice standards.

Directs and controls the purchase and inventory maintenance of all pharmaceuticals and related substances and supplies.

Develops/ monitors systems for packaging/distribution of pharmaceuticals.

Serves as Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee Secretary.

Develops and implements policies and procedures for the Pharmacy Department in accordance with hospital policy and HFAP standards.

Reviews orders entered by the technicians on the patient profile.  Checks doses placed in the cart by technicians to include extemporaneous doses.

Reviews departmental payroll records and passes information on to the Payroll Department.

Directs personnel function for Pharmacy Department by reviewing on a yearly basis all job descriptions and performance standards.  Implements Skiff Policies and Procedures regarding personnel matters.

Directs and participates in complying and analyzing of data on departmental activities and services and prepares related reports.

Establish and maintain, in cooperation with the Accounting Department, a satisfactory system of records and bookkeeping in accordance with the hospital policies for:



Charging the patient for pharmaceuticals and supplies.

Maintaining adequate control over the requisition and dispensing of all drugs and pharmaceutical supplies.

Develops and maintains Pharmacy Drug Formulary in consultation with the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee.

Participates in continuing education seminars, workshops and conventions to keep informed of current trends and developments in the hospital pharmacy field.

Manages Employee Dispensing Benefit.

Performs other related functions as required/directed.','!*!QUALIFICATIONS:


Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy from an accredited college of pharmacy and Iowa License.

Three to five years of staff experience in the hospital pharmacy field preferred.

Knowledge of hospital pharmacy computer systems preferred.
