The University of Plymouth, a leading university in the south west, is seeking a qualified and experienced solicitor, ideally with recent in-house lawyer experience, to join the Legal & Compliance Department. The Legal & Compliance Department as part of the Academic Registry provides relevant, concise clear risk-based legal advice and professional legal services, often under pressure, to Faculties, Schools, Research Institutes, Professional Services and to Governance bodies across the University’s academic, commercial and compliance activities. This is an exciting time to join the team as we are currently engaged in a strategic planning exercise to help us focus our strengths and deliver maximum impacts for clients across the institution. The role is a busy and you will work mostly without supervision in a friendly, professional team comprising lawyers, the Information Governance Officer and an administrator. As a small team we have close working relationships and support each other to make the best use of our collective skills. The team would welcome someone who has ambition for continuous improvement in our work, is positive and able to proactively support colleagues to build the team and our joint strategy. You will report to the Head of Legal & Compliance (Head of L & C). This position is varied, requiring flexibility, but will include: providing advice about academic partnerships and about commercial and contractual relationships and agreements advising about complaints, disputes, litigation and other proceedings providing advice to support academic research including on regulation, IP, licences, consultancy and collaboration agreement maintaining effective relationships with external panel and working with the Head of Legal and Compliance to secure cost-effective external advice as appropriate working independently and under time pressure, to deliver practical risk-based advice to a range of colleagues, whilst maintaining excellent working relationships and engendering trust.
