Responsibilities and duties of the position:

Curriculum Management (70%)

•  An expert in higher education and knowledgeable in instructional design and methods, consult with the Curriculum Oversight Committee, course leadership, faculty, and facilitators regarding learning objectives to coordinate and manage how best to achieve those objectives.

• Identify needs for curriculum links and components, and documenting curriculum delivery in accordance with planned learning objectives.

• Investigate and document any noted misalignments or gaps in curriculum and provide information on how these may be rectified. Work with the Associate Dean and other leaders in the curriculum to ensure horizontal and vertical integration.

• Gain and maintain full working knowledge of the curriculum management software tool (currently E-Value) and its use within medical education; oversee data entry into the tool relative to the mapping of curriculum components.

• Based on thorough knowledge of curriculum software and its stored information, design reports to support accurate and thorough periodic and on-going evaluation and assessment of the curriculum.

• Work with the Director of Technology Innovation related to curriculum management software and other educational software to support assessment and evaluation. Scan the environment for potential new software tools to support the delivery and management of the curriculum.

• The Director will attend and contribute to meetings of key personnel involved in curriculum delivery, e.g., clerkship director meetings, course debriefs. The Assistant Dean will serve as lead in this area.

• The Director will contribute to development of policies related to curriculum and student advancement. The Assistant Dean will serve as a primary lead for policy development including forecasting and planning for future policy needs/changes.

• Generate reports in compliance with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation.

Collaboration (25%)

• Supervise staff reporting to the Director, e.g. Medical Education Specialists, Clerkship Manager, Clerkship Coordinators.

• In collaboration with faculty and staff, participate in the development and delivery of tests and other assessment tools.

• Oversee academic progress and milestones of individual students; collaborate with the Office of Student Affairs and the Director of Program Evaluation and Student Assessment in overall assessments of student progress and performance.

• The Director will contribute to Academic Affairs research activities and scholarly output. The Assistant Dean will provide leadership to support faculty and staff research while pursuing their own research agenda.

Other (5%)

• Maintain appropriate confidentiality of work- and education-related information and materials.

• Engage in and support learning in accordance with related student and patient regulations and ethical norms, such as FERPA and HIPAA.

• Support diversity in all aspects of the educational experience and foster positive collegial relationships amongst students, staff, and faculty.

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships; work cooperatively and collegially with others in a manner consistent with a workplace of dignity and respect; support and engage in equal employment opportunity principles, rules, and regulations.

• Champion positive inter-professional relationships bridging the college’s private/public organization and missions.

• Perform other related duties as assigned to further the mission of the college

Required Education and Experience:

• For the title of Director, both a completed PhD and at least two years of successful experience in medical education, including curriculum management, software utilization, assessment and evaluation, OR, a Master’s degree and at least 5 years of experience in medical education, including experience with curriculum management, software utilization, assessment and evaluation.

• For the title of Assistant Dean, an Ed.D., M.D., or Ph.D. or a terminal degree in a field closely related to education, engineering, or the basic biomedical sciences and at least seven years of experience in medical education, including experience with curriculum management, software utilization, assessment and evaluation.

Required Qualifications

For both the Director and the Assistant Dean:

• Extensive knowledge of successful learning assistance strategies, techniques, and diagnostic instruments.

• Experiences and a record of accomplishment that reflects excellent organizational skills, effective verbal and written communication skills, and attention to detail and follow-through.

• Effective use of interpersonal and communications skills that incorporate tact and diplomacy.

• Must have strong interpersonal skills with the ability to cultivate collaborative and mentoring relationships, solve problems, think creatively and resolve conflicts.

For the Assistant Dean:

• Educational leadership experience in curriculum and/or medical education.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of student and patient privacy regulations (FERPA, HIPAA, etc.)

• Familiarity with the E-Value software, including the concepts and details of how it functions, its reporting capabilities, and how to identify whether generated reports are appropriately productive.
