A store manager's job is to look after the day-to-day operations and management of a retail store. In addition to managing store operations, store managers ensure maximum sales and profitability along with customer satisfaction. With a number of stores, job opportunities for a capable store manager are immense. They a key role in making a store success by ensuring all processes and activities in a store are carried out in a timely and proper manner.

A store manager's responsibilities focus on store presentation, inventory management, key business initiatives, human resource management, marketing execution, loss prevention, payroll management, daily operational cost control and risk management.

Visual merchandising is an integral part of the store manager's job description. This involves creative and effective presentation of products in order to attract customers and promote sales.

The manager is also responsible for product management include ordering products, receiving merchandise, packaging, price changes and handling damaged products and returns.

The store manager is responsible for recruiting new staff. When recruiting, the manager must ensure staffing levels are adequate in order to run the store effectively. A store manager should facilitate team development, training sessions and staff learning to ensure maximum output. In addition, the manager also evaluates employee performance, executes payroll and creates employee's work schedules.

The role of a store manager is to work towards meeting personal and location sales goals along with customer satisfaction. Meeting monthly, quarterly and annual sale goals are key responsibilities given to a store manager. To meet these goals, a manager should set individual sale goals, hold contests for employees and offer sales promotions.

The store manager is responsible for the safety and security of both the customers and the employees.
The responsibilities involve holding safety meetings and training employees to handle emergency situations.

The store manager should possess many skills in order to carry out job responsibilities and be successful. The following list covers most of them:
  • Able to handle and manage a large workforce.
  • Able to solve problems with reasoning and handle unusual circumstances.
  • Organized with attention to detail.
  • Know how to maximize profits and increase sales.
  • Should have the ability to manage multiple responsibilities with demonstrated management skills.
  • Patience to administer every detail of the business.
  • Skills for creative presentations.
  • Fair working knowledge of computers.
  • Leadership qualities.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Good analytical and reasoning skills.
A high school Diploma or GED is required for entry level positions. A degree in Business Administration or similar area will escalate your chances of getting the best jobs on the market.

Packages range from $25,000 to $50,000 depending on store volume and profile. Along with the compensation, store managers are offered benefit packages and receive bonuses depending on sales performance.

You can become a store manager if you are able to look at the big picture and simultaneously handle several tasks. Gaining experience in the retail industry will help with advancing to higher level management positions. Acquiring a degree in Business Administration or Retail Management will boost your resume and employment options. Develop strong management skills to climb the ladder fast and enhance your ability to understand and maximize pricing and sales to escalate your skills and add to your compensation package.
