The Current Career Outlook for Sales Manager Jobs

While many careers are seeing declines in job availability, sales manager jobs are always going to be in demand. During tough economic times, a company's sales are what keep it afloat, and good sales managers are an asset to any company. Sales management jobs can be found in many industries selling different products and services. If you have a strong ability to persuade, a good personality to build rapport, and good follow–up to detail, you can be highly successful in a sales manager job.

The current career outlook for sales manager jobs is much rosier than a lot of other occupations’. In addition, if you are a skilled sales manager, you can not only draw a good base salary, but many positions offer additional commissions, incentives, and bonuses for reaching established sales goals. There are certain products that are needed in both good and bad economic times, and sales manager jobs in these areas provide very stable income and promotion opportunities.

To be successful in a sales manager job, product or service knowledge is essential. You have to be able to present the benefits to the client of the features your product offers them, even over a competitor with a similar product. Many times, similar products are competitive in characteristics and price, and what differentiates your product as better often comes down to service and follow-up when the client needs something.

It is important that you pay attention to details, make sure the customer gets the product they expect—when they need it and at the price they expect. Returning phone calls, making special deliveries or meeting special requests when needed makes a happy and permanent customer, and makes you successful in sales manager jobs. Meeting and exceeding the customers’ expectations is the name of the game.

There are many different ways to find sales manager Jobs. There are specialized Web sites online that offer positions available at many Fortune 500 companies and also consolidate job search Web sites that have positions listed. It is much more affordable and convenient for employers to list positions online to fill a position and receive applications and resumes via email or from their Web site. This is also advantageous to the job seeker, saving gas and time and making it easier to find and apply for many different positions quickly. There may be some companies that run ads in the classifieds, but this number is shrinking, as it is quicker and easier to list them online.

If you have proven sales experience, be sure to provide copies or samples of awards, bonus letters, and anything else you can to show a potential employer your success at previous sales management jobs. This helps put you ahead of the pack when a company is looking to fill an open position, since it proves you have the experience in sales. You may just need to get the product knowledge, which is easily learned and adapted from industry to industry.

Many sales management jobs are lucrative careers paying in excess of $100,000 annually. People who are natural-born salespeople have an easy time of finding a sales position, if they decide to change product lines or go to work for a competitor at a higher pay.

There are also many courses available for sales that are adaptable to any industry, offering the basics of making a sale. There are several common steps in making a sale- building rapport, finding out and qualifying the customers’ needs to your product, offering the features and benefits, pricing, asking for the sale, and closing the sale when you have shown how your product fits their expectations in pricing, characteristic, and needs.

Sales management jobs are often the heartbeat of the company, providing the income and direction of the company’s financial picture. Often it is the sales manager’s job to point out objections or problems with a service or product to improve it and make the company more competitive. The success of a company often depends on a good sales and marketing team.

The current career outlook for sales manager jobs is bright in many expanding fields such as technology, electronics, communications, and everyday items. Finding a sales manager job in an expanding field gives you opportunity for personal growth and success and more opportunities to gain new customers. Some companies have previous customers that have moved on to a competitor because of problems with a previous sales manager or perhaps due to a lack of follow through from the sales team. Often, these are easy customers to regain, once you have discovered their reason for changing companies and you can address those issues.

If you are looking for a sales manager job, it is easiest to search online at a Web site that has done all of the research on positions that are available. It will save you time in finding a new career or switching to a new job. It also helps you to research the company’s product line and become familiar with what you would be selling to come up with ideas for your interview to assure the company that you are the right person for the job.

Many times, the successful sales managers are the ones that are familiar with their product and how it benefits their customers. If you have a good product, it will practically sell itself, as long as you are attentive to the needs of the customer. One of the most important traits for a sales manager is the ability to listen, so you can match your products’ benefits to the customers’ needs; and by listening you will know what the customers’ expectations are and can easily sell them on how you will take care of them.

The current career outlook for sales manager jobs is great, especially for the proven, successful sales managers who take care of their customers’ needs.

Do and Give More Than Is Expected of You
When I was 18 years old I spent three months working as a garbage man in Detroit.  It was one of the more interesting experiences of my life. I had taken the job out of necessity because I had the good fortune of being cut off from any spending money by my parents. Facing my first year of college in a few months, I wanted to make sure that I had money for my books and other expenses.
